Η Επιτροπή Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων του Οργανισμού Ηνωμένων Εθνών (ΟΗΕ) έκρινε ότι η αυστηρή νομοθεσία γύρω από τις αμβλώσεις στην Ιρλανδία παραβιάζει τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα των γυναικών και καλεί την ιρλανδική κυβέρνηση να προχωρήσει στην αλλαγή του νομοθετικού πλαισίου.

Πρόκειται για μια ιστορική απόφαση που αναμένεται να λάβει διεθνείς διαστάσεις, καθώς αφορά σε ένα ιδιαίτερα ευαίσθητο θέμα.

Η απόφαση του ΟΗΕ έρχεται μετά την έκκληση της Amanda Mellet να αλλάξει η νομοθεσία. Η γυναίκα είχε προσφύγει στην Επιτροπή, όταν το 2011 γιατροί αρνήθηκαν να τερματίσουν την εγκυμοσύνη της, παρόλο που διαπίστωσαν ότι το έμβρυο που κυοφορούσε θα πέθαινε λίγο πριν ή μετά την γέννησή του.

Το ιατρικό προσωπικό είχε συστήσει στην γυναίκα να μεταβεί στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο για να τερματίσει την εγκυμοσύνη της, λόγω των αυστηρών νόμων που είναι σε ισχύ στην Ιρλανδία.

Η Επιτροπή του ΟΗΕ έκρινε ότι το γεγονός ότι η Mellety αναγκάστηκε να ταξιδέψει με δικά της έξοδα σε μια ξένη χώρα για να διαφυλάξει την υγεία της ήταν απάνθρωπο και κάλεσε την Ιρλανδική κυβέρνηση να αλλάξει την νομοθεσία.
