Λίγοι είναι οι αρχαιολογικοί χώροι στο Ισραήλ που καλύπτονται με τόσο μυστήριο όσο ο τάφος των Μακκαβαίων. Η Επανάσταση τους έδωσε τέλος στην διαδικασία πλήρους εξελληνισμού των ιουδαϊκών κοινοτήτων της Παλαιστίνης που προωθούσαν οι Σελευκίδες βασιλείς.

Μετά από περισσότερο από έναν αιώνα αναζήτησης, οι αρχαιολόγοι πιστεύουν ότι είναι πολύ κοντά στην ανακάλυψη του τάφου τους.

Τα αρχαία κείμενα περιγράφουν τον τάφο ως: "εντυπωσιακό ψηλό κτίσμα που περιβάλλεται από κίονες που χτίστηκε με πέτρες και καλύφθηκε με πυραμιδοειδείς στέγες".

Η αρχή αρχαιοτήτων του Ισραήλ, δήλωσε ότι μια αρχαία δομή που βρίσκεται στο δάσος Ben Shemen φαίνεται να ταιριάζει με αρχαίες περιγραφές του τάφου.

Η αρχαιολόγος Amit Reem δήλωσε οτι ο σταυρός που βρέθηκε στον τάφο είναι μια ένδειξη. Οι Μακκαβαίοι θεωρούνται ήρωες τόσο του Ιουδαϊσμού όσο και του Χριστιανισμού.
